Knee replacement surgery performed by leading surgeons with leading-edge technology

Schroeder Ambulatory Centre has applied for licensing to provide orthopedic hip replacement surgery, and is currently awaiting response to our application.

If our application is successful, Schroeder Ambulatory Centre will provide OHIP-covered knee replacement surgery performed by leading hospital surgeons at a brand new, state-of-the-art medical centre. Our surgeons, led by Dr. Lu, will use the most advanced AI-assisted technology to operate on patients suffering from chronic arthritis of the hip or knee, enabling faster surgery and recovery so that patients can get back to their lives as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Pending licensing, our knee replacement surgery teams, including highly-skilled and specialized physicians and nurses, will use cutting-edge surgical tools and robotics to deliver fast, high quality knee replacements that don’t require patients to stay overnight (often referred to as outpatient surgery). Patients will be supported throughout the entire process before, during and after their surgery, including post-surgical access to digital tools to support their recovery while keeping in touch with our team. Our specialized clinics, located in the same building, will provide a comprehensive range of supportive services, including pain management, wound care, ageing-related supports (geriatrics) and more.

Patients will require a physician referral.

Who will be able to get knee replacement surgery at Schroeder Ambulatory Centre if we receive licensing?

Due to Schroeder Ambulatory Centre’s care model, which prioritizes doing as many OHIP-covered knee replacement surgeries as possible, we will only be able to accept patients that fit specific eligibility criteria. This is for several reasons related to ensuring patient safety and the best possible result:

  • Our surgeons will perform a high volume of knee replacement surgeries. In order to do this, they will need to ensure that the surgeries they do are relatively “simple”, so that they can do them both quickly and safely.
  • Patients with more complex issues might require additional considerations or preparation for their surgery, or they might need to stay overnight afterwards (which we cannot accommodate).
  • Our priority is always patient safety and the best possible outcome. Taking only relatively simple cases means that we can help hospitals reduce their backlogs and focus on providing more complex care, while taking the type of patients who would benefit most from having their knee replacement surgery done in the community.

Important information for knee replacement surgery patients

Schroeder Ambulatory Centre is not currently accepting patients for orthopedic surgery. If the Centre receives licensing, we would plan to being providing these services in late 2026.

A physician referral will be required to book an appointment for orthopedic surgery. If you don’t have a family doctor, you can request an appointment at our primary care clinic. Referrals can also be obtained from one of our onsite specialized clinics.

If the Centre receives licensing to perform knee replacement surgery, it will be done strictly on an outpatient basis—meaning patients won’t stay overnight after their surgery.

Our patient support team will walk patients through everything they need to know to get ready and what to expect afterwards during the recovery process.

After the knee replacement surgery is done, our post-operative team will support patients through beginning to move with their new knee, guided by a skilled physiotherapist. We’ll also ensure they have all the supports they need to start their new life with their new knee, including care referrals, and follow ups.
