Schroeder Ambulatory Centre has received licensing under Ontario’s Independent Health Facilities Act (ICHSC) to provide gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy services at its Richmond Hill facility. The centre is now accepting physician referrals for GI consults, colonoscopy and gastroscopy, including diagnostic and interventional procedures, performed in a brand-new community surgical setting.
A new community‑based option for GI care
This program expands access to timely, OHIP-covered GI care by offering both specialist consultations and procedures in one location. The Gastrointestinal Endoscopy program supports the assessment and treatment of a wide range of digestive conditions. Referrals are being accepted immediately, and there is currently no wait list, allowing patients to access consults and procedures without delay.
A purpose-built facility for modern GI care
Schroeder Ambulatory Centre’s Gastrointestinal Endoscopy program is delivered in a purpose-built facility designed specifically for outpatient surgical care. The centre features brand-new procedure rooms, modern endoscopy equipment and dedicated recovery spaces, creating a safe and efficient environment for both patients and clinicians.
Located at 9355 Leslie Street in Richmond Hill, the centre offers a convenient, community-based alternative to hospital-based GI services. By combining GI consults, diagnostics and treatment in one setting, the program streamlines care while maintaining high clinical standards.
Comprehensive GI services and expert care team
The Gastrointestinal Endoscopy program at Schroeder Ambulatory Centre is led by gastroenterologist Dr. Zane Gallinger, supported by an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and clinical staff. The program is integrated with a dedicated gastroenterology clinic and other specialized services on site, enabling seamless referrals and continuity of care.
Some of the services available through the program include:
- GI consults for assessment, diagnosis and care planning
- Colonoscopy to examine the large intestine and remove polyps or lesions
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy for examination of the distal colon
- Gastroscopy to evaluate the esophagus, stomach and duodenum
As a charitable non-profit organization, Schroeder Ambulatory Centre works in collaboration with public hospitals to help reduce surgical wait times and increase health-system capacity. By delivering appropriate GI consults and procedures in a community setting, hospitals are better able to focus on more complex cases. The program reflects the collaboration and dedication of clinicians and staff who are expanding access to timely care for the community.
OHIP-covered and patient-centred
All GI consults and gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures at Schroeder Ambulatory Centre are fully covered by OHIP. Patients are not charged privately for insured services and need only present a valid Ontario health card on the day of their appointment.
The program emphasizes patient-centred care, offering convenient access, coordinated consults and procedures, and a modern outpatient experience designed to improve comfort, efficiency and outcomes.
Preparing for your appointment
A physician referral is required for GI consults and endoscopy procedures. Referrals can be submitted via OceanMD e-referral, as well as by fax, phone or email. Once received, the intake team reviews each referral and contacts the patient to coordinate next steps.
Patients will receive clear instructions in advance, including preparation requirements for endoscopy procedures. Some medications may need to be paused, and this will be reviewed during the booking process. Procedures are performed under sedation, so patients must arrange for someone to accompany them home and should not drive for 24 hours following sedation. After a short recovery period, typically under one hour, patients are discharged the same day.
