Schroeder Ambulatory Centre founders named to the Order of Canada

Walter Schroeder and Maria Schroeder, founding philanthropists of the Schroeder Ambulatory Centre, have been appointed Members of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

Their appointments were announced on December 31, 2025, and recognize decades of philanthropic leadership that has strengthened health care, education and community services across Canada.

Schroeder Ambulatory Centre extends its heartfelt congratulations to Walter and Maria Schroeder on this well-deserved national honour. We are proud to be founded on their vision and deeply grateful for their lasting commitment to improving access to care for patients across Ontario.

A national honour recognizing service to Canada

Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes individuals whose service and leadership have shaped Canadian society and made a lasting national impact. Appointees are selected by the Governor General following recommendations from the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada.

Past recipients include leaders in public health, medicine, the arts and humanitarian work, reflecting the breadth of contributions that advance the well-being of Canadians.

Founding vision behind Schroeder Ambulatory Centre

For Walter and Maria Schroeder, the appointment reflects a long-standing commitment to improving access to essential public services. That vision is embodied in the Schroeder Ambulatory Centre, a not-for-profit, publicly funded surgical and diagnostic centre established to help address capacity pressures in Ontario’s health system.

The Centre was developed in collaboration with Ontario hospitals and community health providers to expand access to outpatient care and help reduce surgical backlogs.

A recognition aligned with the Centre’s mission

The Order of Canada appointment formally recognizes the lasting impact of the Schroeders’ philanthropic work. For Schroeder Ambulatory Centre, the honour reflects the values on which the organization was founded: improving access to care, supporting public hospitals and contributing to a stronger, more resilient health system for Ontario patients.

Schroeder Ambulatory Centre once again congratulates Walter and Maria Schroeder on this exceptional recognition and thanks them for their continued leadership, generosity and commitment to strengthening public health care in Ontario.
