Important information for Neurology clinic patients
EMG / NCS Testing: What to Expect
The purpose of EMG and NCS testing is to assess how well your nerves and muscles are working. These tests help diagnose conditions such as nerve injuries, neuropathies, muscle disorders, or nerve compression. By understanding how your nerves and muscles are functioning, we can develop the most effective treatment plan for your condition.
When you arrive, the neurologist will review your history and perform a brief, gentle exam. Our technologist will then carry out nerve conduction studies, and the doctor will review the results with you. If needed, we may proceed with electromyography (EMG), which records muscle activity using a very fine needle.
Describing your symptoms clearly helps us understand your condition. Consider using words like these:
- Numbness – ants crawling, pins and needles, burning, itching, heavy (thick-sock sensation), or stiff (like dried glue)
- Weakness – limb feels heavy, shaky, tires quickly, or gives way; difficulty with fine tasks (picking up pills, nail clippers) or larger ones (stairs, hairdryer)
- Tingling – light tickle vs. sharper pins and needles; painful or just noticeable
- Pain – sharp, burning, throbbing, stabbing, electric shock-like; worse with movement, at rest, or at certain times
It’s also helpful to note:
- Whether symptoms are constant or intermittent
- The exact location (e.g., outer edge of hand, front of thigh)
Clothing & Preparation
- If your legs are being tested: a gown can be provided
- For arms/shoulders: wear a loose T-shirt and remove extra layers
- Please remove socks and shoes for a full neurological exam
Duration & Recovery
Appointments may take up to two hours, as urgent cases can occasionally delay the schedule. Some mild discomfort or soreness is normal, but you can return to normal activities right away.
