What to expect at your appointment
Whether you are coming in for a general neurology consultation or a diagnostic test like EMG/NCS, here is what you can expect.
General neurology consultation
Your first visit will typically last one to two hours, though some appointments may be shorter depending on the nature of your concerns. The neurologist will review your medical history and any previous test results, perform a focused neurological examination, and discuss their findings with you. Depending on your situation, they may recommend further investigations — such as blood work, imaging, or nerve testing — or begin outlining a treatment plan. You are encouraged to bring a list of your current medications and a written summary of your symptoms.
EMG / NCS testing
EMG and NCS tests check how well your nerves and muscles are working. They help identify conditions like nerve injuries, neuropathies, muscle disorders, and nerve compression — so we can create the most effective treatment plan for you.
When you arrive, you will meet our certified technologist who will carry out the nerve conduction studies. The neurologist will then review your history, perform a brief examination, and discuss the results with you. If needed, we may proceed with electromyography (EMG), which records muscle activity using a small, thin needle. Appointments may take up to two hours. The test is well-tolerated by most patients, and you can return to your normal activities immediately afterward.
Clothing & Preparation
- If your legs are being tested: a gown can be provided
- For arms/shoulders: wear a loose T-shirt and remove extra layers
- Please remove socks and shoes for a full neurological exam
