Hip replacement surgery using the latest medical advancements and technology at a new state-of-the-art facility

Schroeder Ambulatory Centre has applied for licensing to provide orthopedic hip replacement surgery, and is currently awaiting response to our application.

If our application is successful, the Centre will provide OHIP-covered hip replacement surgery performed by leading surgeons who also work at major public hospitals. Our surgeons, overseen by Dr. Lu, use the most advanced techniques and medical equipment to operate on patients suffering from chronic arthritis of the hip or knee, making it possible for the procedure to be done quickly and efficiently with minimal disruption to their daily lives.

Pending licensing, our hip replacement surgery teams will use cutting-edge AI-assisted surgical tools and robotics to deliver fast, high quality hip replacements that allow patients to recover quickly, without staying overnight. Patients will benefit from holistic supports throughout the whole process, including post-surgical access to digital tools to support their recovery, and stay connected to their care team. Our specialized clinics, located in the same building, will support patients in need of additional help with pain management, wound care, ageing-related issues and more.

Patients will require a physician referral.

Schroeder Ambulatory Centre Hip Replacement Surgery

As a charitable non-profit, Schroeder Ambulatory Centre is working with leading hospitals to reduce surgical wait times, add to public health capacity and enable public hospitals to focus on providing more complex care to Ontarians.

Through collaborative partnerships with these forward-thinking hospitals, Ontarians are benefiting from convenient access to community care that meets their needs, and a stronger more efficient public healthcare system.

Who will be eligible for hip replacement surgery at Schroeder Ambulatory Centre if we receive licensing?

Due to Schroeder Ambulatory Centre’s care model, which prioritizes doing as many OHIP-covered knee replacement surgeries as possible, we can only accept patients that fit specific eligibility criteria. This is for several reasons related to ensuring patient safety and the best possible result:

  • Our surgeons perform a high volume of hip replacement surgeries. In order to do this, they need to ensure that the surgeries they do are relatively “simple”, so that they can do them both quickly and safely.
  • Patients with more complex issues might require additional considerations or preparation for their surgery, or they might need to stay overnight afterwards (which we cannot accommodate).
  • Our priority is always patient safety and the best possible outcome. Taking only relatively simple cases means that we can help hospitals reduce their backlogs and focus on providing more complex care, while taking the type of patients who would benefit most from having their hip replacement surgery done in the community.

Patients require a physician referral.

Is hip replacement surgery covered by OHIP?

Yes, hip replacement surgery is an insured service covered by OHIP. That means that a patient will never be charged when they choose to receive the specific types of hip replacement surgery that are covered by OHIP under Ontario’s provincial health plan.

However, there are multiple types of hip replacement surgery, and not all of the options are currently covered by OHIP. Patients have the freedom to choose the type of surgery that they think is right for them, and those choices are the same wherever they choose to get a hip replacement surgery, whether or not it’s done at a hospital. For example, a patient is free to choose a replacement hip made of a type of material not covered by OHIP, because they feel it will better meet their needs in the long term. In that case, that specific hip replacement surgery option would not be covered by OHIP anywhere the patient chose to get it done, including at public hospitals.

Our physicians are committed to providing unbiased, transparent and truthful information to patients and families so that they can be empowered to make their own decisions about their care plan. Our physicians will never misinform or attempt to pressure a patient into choose a type of treatment not covered by OHIP—that choice belongs entirely to the patient or, when necessary, their substitute decision-maker. Wait lists for insured vs non-insured hip replacement surgeries are managed separately, the same way they are elsewhere in the public health system.

Important information for hip replacement surgery patients

Schroeder Ambulatory Centre is not currently accepting patients for orthopedic surgery. If the Centre receives licensing, we would plan to being providing these services in late 2026.

A physician referral will be required to book an appointment for orthopedic surgery. If you don’t have a family doctor, you can request an appointment at our primary care clinic. Referrals can also be obtained from one of our onsite specialized clinics.

If the Centre receives licensing to perform hip replacement surgery, it will be done strictly on an outpatient basis—meaning patients won’t stay overnight after their surgery.

Our patient support team will walk patients through everything they need to know to get ready and what to expect afterwards during the recovery process.

After the hip replacement surgery is done, our post-operative team will support patients through beginning to move with their new hip, guided by a skilled physiotherapist. We’ll also ensure they have all the supports they need to start their new life with their new hip, including care referrals, and follow ups.
